Candy Gourlay

Candy Gourlay was a journalist and press photographer in her native Philippines.. To supplement her livelihood she also drew a weekly cartoon strip for a women's magazine, dubbed films with a fake American accent and attended a lot of press receptions offering free food.

She married the FT's Manila correspondent and ended up in England, writing about over-the-counter drugs for Marketing Magazine and later, for the news agency Inter Press Service.

When she finally succumbed to full-time motherhood, Candy Notes from the Slushpilesuccessfully avoided doing the dishes by teaching herself code and eventually became a full-fledged web designer, combining her skills in writing, photography and art. She passionately believes the rise of the social web is an exciting opportunity for children's authors to engage with readers and has spoken on the subject at various author conferences.

She returned to the Philippines in 2005, to write and present the Radio 4 documentary, Motherless Nation about the children left behind by migrant workers.

The experience inspired her to write two novels, Volcano Child and Ugly City - both of which, she hopes, puts a human face to third world calamity and globalization . Ugly City won a place in SCBWI's first Undiscovered Voices anthology. She is represented by Hilary Delamere of The Agency.
